Book Excerpt: Michelle Hurn - The Fox Family Food Fight

Introduction by Joy Sypher

This is the book we've been waiting for. This is the book we need.

I have grandkids and I have a vested interest in their health and education, and I am ecstatic to share how groundbreaking this book is. Michelle Hurn takes on the corporate food industry with her Fox Family saga in an exciting new children's book.

Grocery stores aisles are packed with processed foods. Children are inundated with ads for sugary treats promoted as a healthy option. Fostering healthy eating habits in children feels like an uphill battle.

My oldest grandchild is in kindergarten and already a voracious reader. I expected them to love the alliteration of the book's names, feelings, and business names. Everything starts with the letter F and reads like a nursery rhyme. What they really loved was the list of Freddy's favorite foods on the back page. Except for the fish, this picky eater is eager to try the foods listed. Their second favorite part was when the fox family was in the forest. Camping fever hit hard on that page.

The youngest grandchild, 15 months, loved the brightly colored graphics of all the orange kitties (the fox family.)

I am so grateful to have a children's book that tackles some of the misconceptions shared by many. I look forward to further tales from the Fox Family.

Excerpt from the book:

Papa Felix was frustrated. "I don't understand! It can't be the Feel-Good Foods that are making us feel sick. Look at Foolery!

He eats the Feel-Good Foods every day, and he is the fittest fox I've ever seen." "Has anyone actually seen Foolery eat the Feel-Good Foods?" Grandpa Frankie questioned.

The fox family stared at each other as it dawned on them ... They had never seen Foolery eat the Feel-Good Foods! Was Foolery fooling them into thinking the factory food was the reason he was so strong and handsome? Was it all a lie?

"I don't trust this Foolery fellow," Grandpa Frankie said very frankly. "We all felt fine when we lived in the forest and ate the natural foods we hunted, fished, and foraged."

On September 5, 2023, the American Diabetes Association stated, "Alarmingly, nearly 1 in 2 Americans has diabetes or prediabetes. Both type 2 and prediabetes are increasing at alarming rates in children and teenagers.

Therapeutic carbohydrate restriction, i.e. low-carb diets, are a proven way to reverse type 2 diabetes and associated medical conditions such as obesity. Our future depends on a course correction, requiring proper nutrition education. It's my sincerest desire that children learn and appreciate that what we eat matters. That's why I wrote this book.

About the author

Michelle Hurn is a registered and licensed dietitian with 11 years of experience in clinical, acute care, psychiatric care, and outpatient services. The Fox Family Food Fight is her second book.

While practicing inpatient and outpatient care in the hospital setting, Michelle discovered a disheartening connection between the high-carbohydrate, low-fat, "sugar in moderation" nutrition guidelines she was required to teach, and the rapidly declining health of her patients.

Michelle's first book, The Dietitian's Dilemma, detailed how the current nutrition guidelines came into existence, and advocated for a low-carbohydrate, animal-based way of eating as an option for individuals struggling with type 2 diabetes, mental disorders, eating disorders, sarcopenia, and heart disease.

She is the co-author of the 2023 article: Animal-based ketogenic diet puts severe anorexia nervosa into multi-year remission: A case series, published in The Journal of Insulin Resistance. She has spoken at several events including Low Carb San Diego, Low Carb Boca, and KetoCon in Austin, TX.

As an accomplished endurance athlete, Michelle has competed in 13 marathons and 4 ultramarathons. You can buy Michelle's books, listen to her latest podcast, and follow her on social media at the following:
